WP 5: Free healthy meals in schools - a dietary intervention in Danish schools

Aim:

Conduct of a 5 month, randomised controlled dietary school intervention trial with the NND vs. the current situation (packed lunch from home and/or school canteens/small shops).

 

Milestones:

  • Approval from the local Ethics Committee for the dietary school intervention and associated sub-studies.
  • Execution of the pilot study.
  • Evaluation of outcome of pilot study and modification of protocol for main study.
  • Sociological analysis providing insight into the needs, expectations, wishes and visions of stakeholders directly affected by the provision of a school meals service, and insight into the facilities and character of the organizational settings in which this intervention will take place.
  • Preparation of the main study.
  • Recruitment of schools and children for the main study.
  • Execution of main study with physical examination, blood and urine sampling.
  • Analysis of clinical biochemistry.
  • Recording of physical activity and sleep pattern.
  • Measurement of dietary intake.
  • Completion of sociological studies of expectations and needs among key actors.
  • Final report stating social, cultural and practical opportunities and barriers to the implementation of the NND.
  • Measuring academic performance.
  • Measuring behaviour and social climate: the Student membership Snapshot.
  • Measuring vigilance: The Walter Reed palm-held psychomotor vigilance test.
  • Measuring competence and knowledge in the field of healthy food.

In addition, 5 sub-studies are anchored in this intervention study.
